“Symbol the Lord’s ascension to heaven”

First Baptist Church of New Caney: A Sacred Space Rooted in Architecture and Spirit

Located in a serene, green setting, the First Baptist Church of New Caney is a project that reinterprets the traditional symbolism of a church through contemporary architectural language. Designed with the essential iconography of the church as the house of God in mind, the building embraces the familiar silhouette of a home, with sloping roofs and a welcoming presence that speaks to both community and divinity.

At the heart of the design stands a cross that appears to levitate, subtly detached from the structure. This striking visual element is more than just symbolic—it represents the ascension of the Lord and the triumph of Christ over death on the cross. It invites reflection, inspiring all who approach the church to contemplate faith, elevation, and the power of spiritual connection.

The church is part of a broader architectural complex that includes not only the main sanctuary but also a thoughtfully designed mixed-use building. These two volumes are articulated through a central hall that serves as a connecting space—functional and ceremonial—promoting flow, unity, and gathering. This configuration ensures that both sacred and everyday activities can coexist harmoniously within the same environment.

Every aspect of the design seeks to honor the values of the community while offering a timeless and inspiring place for worship, learning, and connection. The result is an architectural expression of faith: rooted in tradition, elevated by meaning, and built for the future.
